Creating Art
When I first read this assignment I knew I wanted to paint something, I have been painting for as long as I remember but I haven't painted anything this size in almost 15 years. When I began I thought I might paint some children doing something or several different children of different cultures. But when I paint it just kind of comes out and when I started with the sky I just kept going with the colors and then the outline of the castle. I also love history and have always wanted to visit an old castle, but my thinking for this painting went deeper than just a love for history. The purpose for the castle is to show that even people who live in the most wonderful homes deal with issues whether they are a target of racial issues or the cause of it. One does not have to be poor to be a target of any type of biases; and just because one has money does not mean they are not racist. The same can be said for children of abuse and the abusers. The bright sun behind the castle is the dawn of a new day; the dawn of understanding biases and how we can make the world a better place for the next generation of young children. The dawn of a new day is passed due; that is why I chose the dark colors, but there is still hope in the brightness. It is a new day for me and I intend to continue forward with my learning and teaching in an anti-bias classroom. Even after I finish this course, this degree, I intend to continue to grow and learn so that I can help in the development of our children so that their future may be brighter than the sun.

Hi Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful painting and wonderful explanation of its meaning. You are so right that a child can live in a beautiful home and still be in the midst of abuse and destruction. They can be the target of bias or part of a family that is biased. I also agree that the dawn of a day where acceptance and understanding will prevail is past due. We must continue to encourage young children to ask question, share their thoughts and feelings, and plan discussions and activities that will teach them to respect diversity. We must provide caring and supportive environments for children so that they build secure relationships, feel comfortable and confident, and enjoy happy and healthy childhoods. Thanks for sharing!
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteYou are very talented and I enjoyed your representation that went deeper than the outward depiction of diversity to a consideration of power and oppression. “Even people who live in the most wonderful homes deal with issues whether they are a target of racial issues or the cause of it. One does not have to be poor to be a target of any type of biases; and just because one has money does not mean they are not racist. The same can be said for children of abuse and the abusers.”
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI love that you chose a painting to express your insights regarding this course. You chose such a true and positive message to send through your painting. Anyone can be impacted by traumatic influences, regardless of race, socio-economic status, gender, age, etc. However, it is important to understand how these experiences impact others, so that we can provide them with the support and care they need. Everyone is capable of demonstrating resilience, as long as their needs are met through positive influences. Thank you for sharing your beautiful message.
I love your painting and your reasoning behind it. So true just because someone does have money doesn't mean they have no problems or haven't been exposed to different types of situations. I think many times just because someone does have money we often forget about them dealing with these types of traumatic experiences.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth,
ReplyDeleteWOW! I am just blown away at your creativeness. You are truly an artist. I love your painting and the symbolic meanings behind every aspect of it. It is extraordinary how you related your art to everything we have learned in our class. Thank you for sharing this! I plan to always keep a copy of this post.
