One hope that I have with
regard to working with children and families who come from diverse backgrounds
includes the hope that they are being listened to and that their needs are
being met. Many times helping our diverse children and families just takes
listening to the family members and carrying through with the things that they
may need to help their child be successful. Little things can make a big
difference in a child’s learning environment and out diverse families are no different.
One goal that I
would like to set for the early childhood field that I work in, related to
issues of diversity, equity, and social justice includes trainings for teachers
for anti-bias classrooms. Every year we have trainings on so many different
things and they are important, but one thing that we have never had trainings
on or even had someone come and speak about is an anti-bias classroom. I
believe that all teachers would benefit from an anti-bias workshop and they may
even find someone to help support them in trying to make their classroom a
better place for all their children.
As always it has been great
working with all of you, you have been a great support to me through this
class. I appreciate all the responses and comments they have helped me look
deeper and think harder. Thank you so much for everything and I hope to see you
all in the next class on our journey!!
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed reading your posts and I wish you much success with your future endeavors. I agree it is important for children to be heard and learning to listen to children is critical to their self-value and well-being. Even the youngest of children are good at providing cues to their needs and wants. That is one of the joys in my life talking to my grandchildren and students and hearing and seeing their ideas and imagination at work which can be expressed in many different ways. I also believe it would be beneficial to have anti-bias workshops and trainings for everyone that works with children.
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI agree with the hope you have and goal you set. We must take the time to communicate with and listen to children and families share their wants and needs so that we can better serve them. I also feel that early childhood professionals should become knowledgeable about anti-bias education and implement an anti-bias program so that all children and families from diverse backgrounds feel respected and valued.
Best wishes as you continue your educational journey!
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI am in the same boat as you when it comes to having trainings for our program. We have never had a professional development activity or training focused on anti-bias education. I think it would definitely be beneficial for the entire program and the children and families we serve. I believe every child deserves to be educated in an anti-bias environment. If we all join in this journey together, we can provide each other with a circle of support. If we are all focused on creating anti-bias environments, we will be much more likely to achieve our goals because we have a team to support us. Thanks for sharing and best wishes on your continued journey! :)
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed reading your posts throughout this course. They have contributed greatly to the understanding and knowledge I have acquired in this course. We have stated similar goals for the early childhood field, including training for teachers for anti-bias classrooms. We both agree that all early childhood professionals need to be knowledgeable in the areas relating to diversity, equity, and social justice because every child and family is different and in order to serve all children and families with genuine respect and understanding, it is important that we develop an understanding of what it means to be a family from a variety of perspectives and the ways in which family influences identity.
